Do Gas Cans Need to Be Vented?

EZ-POUR® push-in vent

Today’s government-regulated gas cans are hard to use. While designed with good intentions in mind, they lack proper functionality. Two key components missing are the vent and vent cap, small features that make a big difference.

In this article, you’ll learn why gas cans need to be vented, how to add a vent at home, and how EZ-POUR® products provide solutions for your fueling needs.

The Importance of Gas Can Vents

As of January 1, 2009, all portable fuel containers, more commonly known as gas cans, sold in the US are required to conform to regulations that protect children and the environment. This meant adding a locking device to prevent fuel from pouring out unless a lever is pressed and changing the materials to reduce evaporation.

Yet, this comes with three issues.

  1. The new design doesn’t have a vent to release any air that entered while pouring. If poured too quickly, the trapped air can cause gasoline to splash out.
  2. These gas cans are cumbersome, making it hard to hold the release lever while supporting a heavy gas can in an awkward position.
  3. Some gas cans come with spring-loaded nozzles that need to rest on the gas tank at just the right angle for gas to flow.

The last thing you want is to make a mess of your fuel. That’s why EZ-POUR® designed its range of products for old gas cans, allowing you to have a proper storage solution and get a clean pour every time.

Essential EZ-POUR® Products

Make your old gas cans great again with replacement spouts, vents, and flame arrestors.

Replacement Spout and Vent Kits

EZ-POUR® offers four replacement spout kits to suit your specific needs. Each kit comes with a spout, spout cap, push-in vent, flame arrestor, yellow base cap, and black base cap!

Flame Arrestors

One of the greatest dangers in storing gas or other flammable liquids is that the vapors could ignite. Flame arrestors are included for a very important reason: they prevent explosions from occurring.

Constructed with a wire mesh, flame arrestors fit inside the spout, allowing gasoline to flow freely while effectively blocking heat sources from igniting vapors within the can.

Push-In Vents and Vent Caps

Push-In Vents can also be bought separately. They fit many Blitz, Midwest, and other gas cans with a half-inch hole for a vent.

Additionally, our Wedco Vent Cap fits many old Wedco and Scepter vents, and our Chilton Vent Cap fits Chilton vents. They come in a pack of two. That way, you don’t need to worry about purchasing a new one when another is ready to be replaced.

How to Vent a Gas Can

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to install a replacement vent on your gas can.

  1. When creating a hole for your vent, it’s best to use EZ-POUR®’s Half-Inch Reamer, but a step bit works well, too. If using a step bit, create a mark one step above one-half inch so you know when to stop. Do not use a twist bit, as it will create an irregularly shaped hole.
  2. Drill a small pilot hole on the back side of your can.
  3. Then, take your reamer or drill bit and expand your hole to a half-inch diameter.
  4. Next, using a screwdriver and a mallet, hammer your Push-In Vent into place.
  5. Finally, before filling your gas can, be sure to shake out any debris created while drilling.
