Fuel tanks are safe storage solutions for flammable and hazardous liquids like diesel, gasoline, and petrol and are essential for any vehicle. Yet, if fuel tanks are not properly designed and maintained, they can pose safety risks. This is where the importance of fuel tank vents comes in, as they are installed to keep vehicles and passengers safe.
Risks of Unvented Fuel Tanks
Without proper venting, tanks can present serious hazards. As fuel is used, a vacuum forms. This can cause the tank to collapse, potentially resulting in structural damage and fuel leaks.
Additionally, since fuel expands as temperature increases, pressure can build up inside of fuel tanks not properly vented. This can cause the tank to rupture, posing a serious hazard to the vehicle and anyone nearby.
How Fuel Tank Vents Enhance Safety
Fuel tank vents are designed to let air flow in and out of the tank as needed to prevent the formation of a vacuum and maintain balanced internal pressure. In this way, fuel tank vents ensure safety, reducing the risk of fuel leaks and ruptures.
Types of Fuel Tank Vents
Two main types of fuel tank vents are passive and active vents.
Passive vents are simple devices that use atmospheric pressure to manage airflow. They’re relatively low maintenance and commonly used in small fuel tanks or those that do not undergo significant temperature or pressure changes. The design could be a:
- fuel tank one-way valve,
- fuel tank flapper valve, or
- simply a hole in the tank.
Meanwhile, active vents use a powered mechanism to control the airflow. They’re often used in larger fuel tanks or those that experience significant changes in temperature or pressure. The design could be a:
- diaphragm vent,
- mechanical vent, or
- pneumatic vent.
Your Gas Can Should Have a Vent, Too
The new government gas cans, while created with good intentions in mind, are hard to use. As of January 1, 2009, all gas cans sold in the US must conform to regulations that protect children and the environment. Since they don’t come with a vent, if poured too quickly, air trapped inside can make the gasoline splash out. That is such a waste, especially with the high gas prices nowadays!
Since the 2009 regulations only apply to new fuel containers, it’s time to upgrade your old gas cans with spouts and vents that work.
