Your lawn goes through a lot in summer, from heavy use and ground compaction to weeds and disease. A great way to get your lawn healthy again is by applying a winter fertilizer. Continue reading to learn the best time to apply winter fertilizer, how to select the one you need, and more!
What Is Winter Fertilizer?
Don’t be fooled; a winter fertilizer, also known as a winterizer, is applied in the fall in preparation for winter weather. This lawn care treatment ensures your grass survives the freezing temperatures and flourishes in early spring.
When to Apply Winter Fertilizer
Winter fertilizer is added when the lawn is done growing but is not yet dormant. For most parts of the US, the best time is between September 1 and October 15. However, it depends on where you live. Fertilizer may need to be applied sooner in northern states, which experience colder temperatures.
It’s important not to apply winter fertilizer too late, as the nutrients may not take hold in time to protect the grass from cold weather conditions.
Choosing the Best Winter Fertilizer for Your Lawn
Winter fertilizers incorporate nitrogen (N) and potassium (K). Nitrogen helps restore the lawn’s carbohydrates, giving it fuel leading into the winter months and early spring. Potassium gives grass the nutrients it needs to survive through cold weather and snow mold. Most winter fertilizers have a 2:1 ratio of nitrogen to potassium.
Some may also include phosphorus (P). A fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 16-4-8 is a popular option for many homeowners and gardeners.
Having a water-soluble, quick-release formula is important. It’ll quickly release nitrogen and other nutrients and dissolve faster in the soil.
How to Apply Winter Fertilizer
Once you’re ready, follow these steps!
- Mow the grass so it’s even, and pick up any dead foliage. You may also want to over-seed your lawn.
- Apply the fertilizer evenly by hand or with a fertilizer spreader. Two applications will make sure you don’t miss any spots.
- With each application, water it in. This process could be done right before a rainy day.
