Typically, diesel fuel has a shelf life of 28 days on its own, but with additives, its life span can be extended up to 6 to 12 months on average or up to 1.5 to 2 years. The following are three of the most common results of improper diesel fuel storage:
- Hydrolysis—The diesel’s exposure to water creates hydrolysis, a chemical reaction that breaks down the diesel and makes it susceptible to the growth of microbes, including bacteria and fungus.
- Microbial Growth—Often produced from excess moisture, microbial growth has implications both practically and sustainably. The microbes can further break down diesel acid and create buildup and clogged parts. Diesel contains sulfur to make the fuel more stable and less prone to microbial growth, but an EPA mandate is requiring less sulfur to be used so there are fewer pollutants in the air.
- Oxidation – Exposing diesel fuel to air can happen instantly, as soon as diesel fuel leaves the refinery. Excess oxygen can corrode tanks and clog filters with unwanted sediment and sludge due to oxidized chemical reactions.
