How to Store Diesel Fuel (And Why It’s Important!)

Diesel fuel has many practical uses outside of powering freight trucks and machinery. Many boats, farming equipment, and certain cars utilize diesel fuel. Adequately storing the diesel fuel allows the machinery to function at a high level. Keep reading to learn how to store your diesel fuel and why it’s necessary to take precautions to extend the lifespan of your diesel supply.

Best Conditions for Diesel Fuel

It’s recommended to store diesel fuel in a secure tank or portable yellow gas can that’s in a cool, dry environment. Diesel fuel must also be maintained and treated with the correct stabilizers or biocides to ensure it is preserved and long-lasting for optimal functionality.

Pay attention to the environment in which you store diesel fuel. Not only should the location be dry, but continue to check for sources of pooled water from rain runoff after storms or if you live in or around a flood zone. Even the slightest environmental change can be detrimental to your diesel supply.

Risks of Improper Diesel Fuel Storage

Typically, diesel fuel has a shelf life of 28 days on its own, but with additives, its life span can be extended up to 6 to 12 months on average or up to 1.5 to 2 years. The following are three of the most common results of improper diesel fuel storage:

  • Hydrolysis—The diesel’s exposure to water creates hydrolysis, a chemical reaction that breaks down the diesel and makes it susceptible to the growth of microbes, including bacteria and fungus.
  • Microbial Growth—Often produced from excess moisture, microbial growth has implications both practically and sustainably. The microbes can further break down diesel acid and create buildup and clogged parts. Diesel contains sulfur to make the fuel more stable and less prone to microbial growth, but an EPA mandate is requiring less sulfur to be used so there are fewer pollutants in the air.
  • Oxidation – Exposing diesel fuel to air can happen instantly, as soon as diesel fuel leaves the refinery. Excess oxygen can corrode tanks and clog filters with unwanted sediment and sludge due to oxidized chemical reactions.

Diesel fuel is at risk any time it is improperly stored. It takes seconds to create a chemical reaction that can sour the entire tank of fuel. Maintaining high-functioning equipment begins with mindful fuel storage.
