Which of the 4 Types of Fuel Should You Choose?

It happens to the best of us – you take a brand-new vehicle to the gas station, but you’re not quite sure which type of gasoline you need. Fueling up isn’t quite as simple as it used to be, especially with all of the available options. Fortunately, EZ-POUR® is a fuel expert. Let us assist you by showcasing the differences between regular, premium, flex fuel, and diesel fuel.

Should I Choose Regular?

One of the most common forms of fuel for drivers throughout the U.S., regular unleaded gasoline is the best choice for a typical car engine. It has an octane rating of 87 and is perfect for everyday driving. What does this mean? Octane measures how stable a fuel is when it is compressed inside of an engine. If it’s not high enough, then the gasoline will ignite too early and give you much less power than you were expecting.

Can I Upgrade to Premium?

Gasolines with high octane ratings, like premium unleaded gasoline, are made for engines that need to work harder. Turbochargers and superchargers are examples of engines that benefit from its rating of 91+. The best way to know if your vehicle runs on premium is to check your car’s manual.

What is Flex Fuel?

Another option that can be found at the pump is flex fuel – a combination of ethanol and gasoline that can only be used in flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs). These vehicles run on a variety of fuel mixtures from regular gasoline to E85 (85% ethanol and 15% regular unleaded gasoline). To find out if you have a FFV, check for a yellow gas cap or even a capless fuel filler with a yellow ring.

When Do I Need Diesel?

A majority of the time, diesel is used to fuel up commercial trucks, public transportation, construction equipment, and farm machinery due to a superior fuel economy. There is a chance that your pickup truck will run on diesel, but make sure to check your vehicle’s manual. Only diesel engines will run on diesel.
